How to become involved
UAEDI consists of a Director and a voluntary network of University of Arkansas faculty, staff, students, administrators and external partners who share a mutual interest in promoting the mission of UAEDI; that is, to enhance the economic and social well-being and prosperity of the people of Arkansas by extending University of Arkansas programs, as appropriate, in partnership with others having similar interests.

Individuals may become involved with the activities of UAEDI at many levels to include any or all of the following:

Electronic Mailing List
UAEDI maintains two electronic mailing lists for individuals who want to be kept aware of what is going on within UAEDI via email. One is for University of Arkansas faculty, staff, students and administrators (referred to as the “UAEDI Campus Mailing List”) and the other is for individuals outside the University of Arkansas (referred to as the “UAEDI Partners Mailing List”). There is no regularly scheduled mailing, but the average number would be perhaps one to two per month. Contact the UAEDI Director, preferably by email (ojl@uark.edu), if you wish to be on one of these lists as appropriate. Please include your name and contact information to include email, affiliation, address, and phone numbers including fax.

UAEDI Databases

UAEDI sponsors a number of databases to include the University of Arkansas Capabilities Database, the Arkansas Entrepreneurial Resource Database and the Arkansas Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Resource Database (not yet available to the public). Instructions for being included as part of these databases is provided here. Please note that UAEDI uses the “University of Arkansas Capabilities Database” to inform potential partners, both on an off campus, about the various faculty, staff, student and administrative programs at the University of Arkansas that relate to broad-based development (economic, community, education and leadership). UAEDI strongly encourages the inclusion of as many University of Arkansas programs as appropriate in this database.

Periodic Meetings of UAEDI
UAEDI holds periodic general meetings during the academic year. In addition, there will be a number of UAEDI Discussion Group and Special Initiative Meetings held both on- and off-campus. Anyone with an interest in UAEDI activities is invited to attend. Notification of these meetings is through the UAEDI electronic mailing list, the University of Arkansas Daily Headlines, and the “Announcements” section of the UAEDI home page.

SEED (Students Engaged in Economic Development) Program
UAEDI sponsors the SEED (Students Engaged in Economic Development) program to encourage, facilitate, publicize and recognize individual and collective student efforts in class projects that enhance broad-based development (economic, community, educational and leadership) in Arkansas. Depending upon the nature of the project, UAEDI publicizes the project throughout Arkansas, but especially to the hometowns of the students. Direct community involvement in identifying and reviewing SEED projects is encouraged. At the end of the class project, and upon the recommendation of the class instructor, a student receives a letter of appreciation from the Director of UAEDI and a formal UAEDI SEED Certificate singed by the class instructor, the UAEDI Director, and the community representative (if applicable).

Contact the Director of UAEDI (ojl@uark.edu) if:

  • You have a class that is involved in a broad-based development project or would like to be.
  • You are aware of a potential broad-based development project and wish to determine if there is a faculty member who might have an interest in discussing your idea.
  • If you are a faculty member with a strong interest in identifying these types of broad-based development projects for your class, please submit your programmatic interest into the University of Arkansas Capabilities Database and contact the UAEDI director.

Proposals Requiring Partnerships
One of the key activities of UAEDI is to help faculty write stronger proposals in partnership with others having similar interests. UAEDI facilitates this activity in the following ways:

  • Encouraging University of Arkansas faculty, staff, students and administrators to submit a description of their respective programs, as appropriate, into the University of Arkansas Capabilities Database. Data Input Instructions
  • Helping establish communication between members of the University of Arkansas faculty, staff, students and administrators and possible external partners to explore opportunities for submitting joint proposals, in part through UAEDI sponsored databases.
  • Providing a “sounding board” for those interested in pursing joint proposals that involve the University of Arkansas.

Ongoing Projects co-sponsored by UAEDI
UAEDI has already had success in being part of funded projects related to broad-based development (economic, community, educational and leadership). It is UAEDI’s intent to build on these successes by working with those involved in these projects, and expanding the opportunities for others to participate, as appropriate. For examples, see Partnerships.

Discussion Groups and Special Initiatives
UAEDI seeks to identify broad-based development topics (those that involve some aspect of economic, community, educational and leadership development) for which breakthrough solutions are needed. These topics may originate from discussions at the University of Arkansas or from around the state. Once a topic has been identified, UAEDI will attempt to facilitate the creation of a Discussion Group that is open to anyone who wishes to participate.. It is the expectation that open and honest dialog in a Discussion Group will lead to one or more Special Initiatives, which may involve the writing of proposals to obtain the resources needed to evaluate and implement a “breakthrough solution.” For examples of this endeavor, see Partnerships.
