| TO: UAEDI Discussion Group: Enhancing Pre-college Math and Science Education in Arkansas FROM: Otto Loewer, UAEDI Director RE: Second Meeting of UAEDI Math-Science Discussion Group
INVITATION LIST: Meeting is open to all who have an interest in this topic
TIME AND PLACE: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm Thursday, October 30, 2003 Room 312 Arkansas Union University of Arkansas Fayetteville, AR
MEETING ROOM LOCATION: The meeting room (ARKU room 312) is a little tricky to find. I’m told that it is located in the NW corner of the food court on the left hand side. Go through the seating area to the back. It is the only room with a door and is marked with the room number. This is a brown bag format in that UAEDI is not yet rich enough to provide a free lunch!
TOPIC AND ASSIGNMENTS: In accordance with our plans from the last meeting on September 23, 2003: * Please provide a “list of short-sweet bulleted ideas” for sharing about what current UA programs and partners COULD DO to: o Enhance math-science education in Arkansas o Secure external funding to make the ideas become realty.
[Note: If you provide these to me before the meeting via email, I’ll try to assemble them into a single handout for the meeting. Otherwise, please bring any handouts you wish to distribute to the meeting.]
* Please come prepared to assist in putting together an inventory of: o Ideas for full or partial solutions: (this will be the main focus of the meeting) o Current UA programs (program names including people to be involved) that could contribute to making these ideas become reality (If not already listed, these may be placed in the new UA Capabilities Database) o Current partner programs (program names including people to be involved) that could contribute to making these ideas become reality (we may want to consider a “partner database”) o Upcoming “Events and Dates” that are important to what we are trying to accomplish through our ideas. (we’ll post these on the UAEDI website.) o Possible sources of funding and due dates for proposals as related to the ideas we generate.
LONG-TERM GOAL FOR DISCUSSION GROUP: Our long-term goal for this Discussion Group is to generate outstanding ideas and then to create one or more Special Initiatives that target funding for their creation, support and implementation. The Discussion Group represents those who have a broad interest in enhancing pre-college math and science education in Arkansas. The Special Initiative group(s) are subsets of the Discussion Group composed of UA faculty, staff, administrators, students and partners who seek to implement one of more of the ideas generated by the Discussion Group.
TIMEFRAME: While there is no set time frame, we should strive to be putting proposals together and submitting them before the end of the 2004 spring semester and hopefully sooner.
CONSIDERATIONS FOR DISCUSSION: At the end of the September 23 meeting and since then, a number of you have raised questions and presented possible funding opportunities and ideas. I note some of these below to factor into our discussions for the upcoming meeting.
*Question: Should we add technology and engineering to science and math in our Discussion Group? One reason for doing so is the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) initiative by NSF. * NSF has a program well suited for the types of things that we are discussing. The due date for proposals is in mid-November, so we need to meet no later than the end of October if we are to have much chance of meeting the submission deadlines. *At the end of the session a number of ideas surfaced about how to involve UA students in this effort in some very creative ways. This seemed to attract a lot of support and enthusiasm.
ADDITIONS/DELETIONS FROM THE DISCUSSION GROUP MAILING LIST Please let me know if you have suggestions for additions to this mailing list or if you want you name removed from the mailing list.
